In this trailer, we go down to Maryland to spy on Elle Muliarchyk as she shoots portraits of Stephen Dixon for our October issue.
Filmed at Mr. Dixon’s Baltimore residence.
About the subjects:
Stephen Dixon is a two-time finalist for the National Book Award, for Frog and Interstate. He is the recipient of the O. Henry Award, the Paris Review Train Prize, and a Guggenheim fellowship. Mr. Dixon is a former professor of Creative Writing at Johns Hopkins University. His short works have appeared in numerous publications, including Harper’s, The Paris Review, and Best American Short Stories. He lives in Baltimore and is admirably focused: “I’m actually getting some work done,” he said in the midst of the shoot.
Elle Muliarchyk took her first photographs when she was a teenage model, creating hundreds of her own “campaigns” and “editorials” by secretly taking self-portraits in the changing rooms of high-fashion boutiques and wearing their expensive garments—she was arrested multiple times for doing so. Though Ms. Muliarchyk spends her life creating images and films that explore our outer shells (fashion), she in fact lives mostly inside her head. “It’s literature, ideas and discourse that are the true ‘love of my life,'” says the photographer.
